Leire er et av våre eldste byggematerialer. Den kan formes, stables, støpes og brennes, og inngå som overflate, struktur og konstruksjon. Samtidig er leire et materiale hentet direkte fra grunnen, formet av geologiske prosesser, påvirket av vær, tid og bruk.

Temautstillingen søker kunsthåndverk og materialbaserte kunstprosjekter som utforsker dette spennet, gjerne med forslag som går utover det autonome objektet og aktiverer rommet omkring seg. Det kan være skulpturer, installasjoner, konstruksjoner, arkitektoniske inngrep eller stedsspesifikke arbeider, inne i kunsthallen eller ute i det offentlige rom. Arbeidene kan gå i dialog med byggets arkitektur, men også med terreng, vegetasjon, vær og eksisterende infrastruktur. De kan være monumentale eller lavmælte, varige eller midlertidige, eller laget for å eroderes eller forsvinne.

Porsgrunn danner en viktig ramme for utstillingen; byens historie er tett knyttet til industri, geologi, porselen og produksjon. Kunsthall Grenlands 200 kvm store utstillingssal, med en takhøyde på mellom 6-8 meter gir mulighet for arbeider som samhandler med arkitekturens skala og kropp. Temautstillingen 2027 åpner også for stedsspesifikke prosjekter ute i nærliggende offentlige rom.

Praktisk informasjon

• Utstillingen vil finne sted i Kunsthall Grenland og i nærliggende offentlige rom tilknyttet Kunstløypa mellom bruene (se kart nederst på siden)
• Søknadsfrist er tirsdag 5. januar 2027 kl. 13.00
• Monteringsperiode fra 3. mai – 20. mai 2027
• Utstillingsperioden varer fra 22. mai – 27. juni 2027

Produksjonsstøtte og arbeidsopphold

Temautstillingen 2027 vil kuratere inntil sju kunstnere eller kunstnergrupper. Hver av disse vil motta produksjonsstøtte på kr 20 000, i tillegg til utstillingshonorar og utstillingsvederlag.

Kunsthall Grenland har også mulighet til å tilby arbeidsopphold ved verkstedet 1400 på Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik (PP), samt bidra med materialer og andre produksjonsressurser. Eventuelle behov for dette må beskrives og begrunnes i søknaden. Tildeling vurderes ut fra prosjektets karakter og tilgjengelige ressurser.

Søknadskriterier

• Utstillingen har åpen innsending og søkes i Norske Kunsthåndverkeres søknadsportal innen tirsdag 5. januar 2027 kl. 13.00. Merk at du må logge inn for å åpne søknadsskjemaet. Om du ikke tidligere har søkt noen av NKs utstillinger eller støtteordninger, må du opprette bruker. Man trenger ikke å være medlem av NK for å opprette bruker eller søke Temautstillingen.
• Man må være basert i Norge for å søke Temautstillingen 2027.
• Man kan søke med stedsspesifikke, performative og prosessbaserte verk, samt samarbeidsprosjekter og tverrfaglige kunstneriske prosjekter, både innendørs i kunsthallen og utendørs.
• Man kan kun søke med ett verk/prosjekt. Det kan være nyprodusert, påbegynt eller en skisse.
• Søknaden skal inneholde en egen prosjekt- eller verksbeskrivelse i PDF-format på maksimalt én A4-side.
• Søknaden skal inneholde portfolio og CV, og eventuelt lenke til egen hjemmeside.
• Verk må være i kunstners eie eller tilgjengelig som om det var i kunstners eie.
• Pris på verkene må oppgis i søknadsskjemaet, slik at utstillingsvederlaget kan beregnes.

Om Norske Kunsthåndverkeres Temautstilling
Temautstillingen 2027 er organisert av Norske Kunsthåndverkere i samarbeid med Kunsthall Grenland. Temautstillingen er en årlig utstilling som skal utforske kunsthåndverkets særegne potensial og utfordre etablerte normer innen formidling av kunsthåndverk.

Om Kunsthall Grenland
Kunsthall Grenland (etb. 2013) er lokalisert i Porsgrunn sentrum. Kunsthallen formidler samtidskunst og kunsthåndverk gjennom utstillinger, produksjonsopphold, seminarer og publikasjoner — med samtidskeramikken i fokus og porselen som sentralt materiale.

Kunsthall Grenlands verksted 1400 er på 220 kvm og inviterer til arbeid med leire, støp, brenninger m.m. Fra PP får kunsthallen tilgang på leire, og muligheter for brenninger i større ovn og teknisk veiledning. PP har produksjonslinje med alle fasiliteter intakt; ovner i ulike størrelser, gipslager, glasur- og porselensmaleravdeling.

Temautstillingen 2027 faller sammen med finalen for Kunsthall Grenlands treårige prosjekt; Kunstløypa mellom bruene, som arrangeres i tett samarbeid med Porsgrunn kommune. Målet har vært å etablere og aktivisere en rundløype for kunst med bruk av porselen og keramikk i bysentrum.

Om kuratoren
Randi Grov Berger driver visningsrommet Entrée i Bergen og arbeider også som frilanskurator, blant annet for KORO. Hun har en MFA i Art in Public Realm fra Konstfack i Stockholm og Skapende kuratorpraksis fra Kunst- og designhøgskolen i Bergen. I 2020 kuraterte hun den 44. Tendenser-utstillingen, Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, ved Galleri F 15, og hun har også kuratert to utstillinger ved Kunsthall Grenland tidligere.

Temautstillingen 2027: Ceramics – Architecture – Landscape

Kunsthall Grenland and the Norwegian Association for Craft Artists (Norske Kunsthåndverkere) invites artists to apply for Temautstillingen 2027: Keramikk – arkitektur – landskap. The exhibition is curated by Randi Grov Berger.

Clay is one of our oldest building materials. It can be shaped, stacked, molded, and fired. As well as used as a surface, a structural element, and a building component. At the same time, clay is a material extracted directly from the ground, shaped by geological processes, and influenced by weather, time, and use.

Temautstillingen seeks craft and material-based art projects that explore this spectrum and welcomes proposals that go beyond the autonomous object and engages with its surrounding space. This may include sculptures, installations, constructions, architectural interventions, or site-specific works. Either inside Kunsthall Grenland or outside. The works may engage in dialogue with the building’s architecture, as well as with the surrounding terrain, vegetation, weather, and existing infrastructure. They can be monumental or understated, permanent or temporary, or designed to erode or disappear.

Porsgrunn provides an important setting for the exhibition; the city’s history is closely tied to industry, geology, porcelain, and production. Kunsthall Grenland’s 200-square-meter exhibition hall, with a ceiling height of between 6 and 8 meters, allows for works that engage in a dialogue with the scale and form of the exhibitions space. Temautstillingen also welcomes site-specific projects in Kunsthall Grenland’s nearby public spaces.

Practical Information

• The exhibition will take place in Kunsthall Grenland and in nearby public spaces associated with Kunstløypa mellom bruene (see map at the bottom of the page)
• The application deadline is Tuesday, January 5, 2027, at 13:00.
• Installation period: May 3 to May 20, 2027
• The exhibition period is from May 22 to June 27, 2027

Production Grants and the workshop 1400

Temautstillingen 2027 will include up to 7 artists/artist groups. Participants will receive a production grant of 20,000 NOK, in addition to an exhibition remuneration and artist fee.

Kunsthall Grenland can also offer stay and the use of the workshop 1400 at Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik (PP). The kunsthall can also provide materials and other production resources, but these must be described and justified in the application and will be determined based on the nature of the project and available resources.

Application Criteria

• The exhibition is curated on the base on this open call, which must be submitted via Norske Kunsthåndverkeres application portal by Tuesday, January 5, 2027, at 13:00. Please note that you must log in to the webpage to access the application form. If you have not previously applied for any of NK’s exhibitions or grant programs, you must create a user account. You do not need to be a member of NK to create an account or apply for Temautstillingen.
• Applicants must be based in Norway to apply for Temautstillingen 2027.
• Applications may include site-specific, performative, and process-based works, as well as collaborative projects and interdisciplinary projects, both indoors in the kunsthall and outdoors.
• Applicants may only submit one work/project. It may be a newly produced work, a work in progress, or a sketch.
• The application must include a project/work description in PDF format, limited to one A4 page.
• The application must include a portfolio and a resume, and/or a link to a website.
• The artwork must be owned by the artist or be available as if it were owned by the artist.
• The price of the artwork must be stated on the application form in order to calculate the exhibition fee.

About Norske Kunsthåndverkeres Temautstilling

Temautstillingen 2027 is organized by the Norwegian Association for Craft Artists (Norske Kunsthåndverkere) in collaboration with Kunsthall Grenland. Temautstillingen is an annual exhibition designed to explore the unique potential of crafts and challenge established norms in the mediation of crafts.

About Kunsthall Grenland

Kunsthall Grenland (established in 2013) is located in Porsgrunn. The Kunsthall promotes contemporary art and crafts through exhibitions, residencies, seminars, and publications—with a focus on contemporary ceramics and porcelain as the primary medium.

Kunsthall Grenland’s workshop 1400 covers 220 square meters and invites artists to work with clay, casting, firing, and more. Through PP, the kunsthall has access to clay, opportunities for firing in a large kiln, and technical guidance. PP has a production line with all facilities intact: kilns of various sizes, a plaster storage area, and a glazing and porcelain painting workshop.

Temautstillingen 2027 coincides with the finale of Kunsthall Grenland’s three-year project, Kunstløypa mellom bruene, which is organized in close collaboration with the municipality of Porsgrunn. The goal has been to establish and promote an art trail featuring porcelain and ceramics in the city center.

About the Curator

Randi Grov Berger runs the Entrée gallery in Bergen and have worked on several projects as a freelance curator, including for KORO. She holds an MFA in Art in the Public Realm from Konstfack in Stockholm and a degree in Curatorial Practice from the Bergen Academy of Art and Design. In 2020, she curated the 44th Tendenser exhibition, Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, at Galleri F 15, and she has also curated two exhibitions at Kunsthall Grenland.
